Description
The Gulshan Club site poses intractable problems for any architect. The site has an odd configuration in two parcels, truncated by a property (and building) hiding the larger parcel. The smaller portion and the smaller side has frontage on the major public thoroughfare - GULSHAN AVENUE (extension of Kemal Ataturk Avenue from Banani). The surrounding properties are built to the maximum leaving minimum open spaces and the physical requirements of Gulshan Club will add to dense urban built-up. These site limitations and contextual urban design considerations impose strict constraints and limited design choices but any architectural solution/proposal must address them and resolve these restricting parameters and contextual issues creatively. Our design proposal, our modest effort tried not only to resolve these contradictions but also devise a functional, competent, high-quality, high-end private recreational and leisure facility housed within a handsome and introspective building form.
Concept
The program for the Gulshan Club Complex comprises two sets of related but distinct functions. This along with unwieldy site configuration, phasing requirement and functional need disproportionate to the parcel size leave very little option. The condition forces the concept. Conceptually our proposal gives the Guest House and the Club distinct identity. The two functions are in two blocks linked at the fourth floor level by a bridge, a restaurant, common driveway and an open space. Uniform climate responsive fenestration with a combination of creepers and sun breakers integrate the blocks into a single entity.
The concept takes advantage of the natural light and vegetation. The important areas such as the Lobby, Lounge, Café, Restaurant, Bar and Residential Facilities are naturally lit. The concept incorporates vegetation in profusion to shade and cut off solar radiation, reduce temperature, noise, dust and also to sooth the mind.
Reducing energy demand and creating a sustainable green building was the signature theme of the design concept.
